What To Do When Your Child Doesn’t Want To Go To School

July 30, 2021

Anxiety varies widely among young children, and its symptoms can manifest in a variety of ways. Going to school can be worrisome to some children because they are leaving the comfort of their parents, sometimes for the first time. Their emotions may be so big that they have difficulty understanding and articulating their worries. And sometimes the root cause of their anxiety may be deeper than that.

Oftentimes, what your child says and how they are actually feeling can be very different, but they themselves may not fully comprehend what’s going on. As parents, we may think we know what is bothering them, but our assumptions may not always be accurate.

The below chart can be a useful tool for parents to uncover the root cause of a child’s feelings or behavior, and help put them on a path toward self-confidence and feeling better. If you are concerned that your child is struggling, talk with your child’s pediatrician for further resources and support.
