Our course offerings and schedules vary depending on what training is available and most current. Twenty-five courses are currently available, including pre-service, core knowledge, and continued education. These classes range from CPR and First Aid certification to health and safety, proper supervision, as well as education-specific courses.

Three (3) hours Special Needs Core of Knowledge Training presented by Columbia Academy Leadership Institute. The cost of the training is $25 per participant. COVID-19 Safety Guidelines for In-Person Trainings:

  • Hand sanitizer will be provided at the entrance to the school and MUST be used by all who enter the building.
  • All participants will need to have their temperature taken upon entering the building. Temperature MUST be lower than 100.4 in order to remain in the training. Temperatures are required to be recorded.
  • In addition to your temperature being taken you MUST answer the following health screening questions:
    1. Have you shown any signs or symptoms of or tested positive for COVID -19 in the 14 days?
    2. Has anyone in your household shown any signs or symptoms of or tested positive for COVID -19 in the last 14 days?
    3. Have you been to any large group gatherings where social distancing was not practiced in the last 14 days?
  • If the answer is yes to any of the above questions, then the participant will not be allowed to stay for the training, a credit will be issued for another training date.
  • All participants MUST have a mask that covers both their nose and mouth on when entering the building, throughout the training, and when exiting the building.
  • All participants should bring their own writing instrument to be used during the training.
  • Trainings are limited to 14 participants and seating will be spaced apart to meet proper social distancing guidelines.

 

Leadership Institute Course Details

  • Including all Children and the ADA

    Explore the requirements of ADA for early child care programs, examine best inclusionary practices, and learn about resources which can support you and your families. This training meets the MSDE pre-service training requirements. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 3 hours SN

  • Experience True Art

    Children love the process of creating art and aren’t as concerned about the finished product. Learn the difference between product and process art, and create some process art yourself! **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 1 hour CD / 1 hour CUR

  • Health and Safety Preschool-Elementary and Middle School

    Health and safety practices, what are they and why are they followed? This training will discuss various areas of health and safety such as hand washing, cleaning and sanitizing equipment and toys, caring for ill and injured children, and nutrition. Appropriate supervision to prevent injuries both indoors and outdoors will be addressed. Separate classes are offered for preschool and elementary and middle school to address the differing needs of the children. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 2 hours HSN {*} Required for Columbia Academy Employees

  • Learning in Action

    Do you want to learn more about Project Based Learning and engage your students in real world, hands on experiences that make learning fun for all! Come and learn basic techniques, including brainstorming, setting objectives, project planning, selecting events or products and documentation. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 2 hours CUR

  • Let’s Play!

    There are many aspects of play, but the one thing we know is that children learn best through play! Come learn the “in’s and out’s” of play and explore the many options for creating learning centers! **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 2 hours CUR

  • Learning to Look, Looking to Learn

    Developing the tools and skills needed to record children’s achievements and growth affords teachers and caregivers the opportunity to formulate an appropriate learning path for each individual child. This workshop explores how to make the process of observation and documentation easier and more productive for you. Learn new techniques for observation and documentation. Infants and Toddlers will focus on observation using the Ounce Scale. 2 ‘s and 3’s will focus on observation using Creative Curriculum. 4’s – Elementary and Middle School will focus on observation using The Work Sampling System. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 1 hour CUR/ 1 hour CD

  • Making Books Come Alive!

    Reading the same books over and over? Put the excitement back in story time, as well as learn new techniques and activities to enhance books and foster a love of reading. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! .5 hour SN / 1.5 hour CUR

  • Making the Most of Conferences

    Parent conferences are a great opportunity to explain your program and gain support from parents. Come learn some basic concepts to ensure a positive and productive parent-teacher conference. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 1 hour COM / 1 hour PRO

  • Navigating the Domains and Checklists

    Using the domains and checklists involves different tasks at different times of the school year, all directed at making observation and recording an integral part of your classroom. This course will extend your knowledge of the domains and how to utilize the checklists. Infants and Toddlers will focus on the domains and checklists using the Ounce Scale. 2 ‘s and 3’s will focus on the domains and checklists using Creative Curriculum. 4’s – Elementary and Middle School will focus on the domains and checklists using The Work Sampling System. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 1.5 hours CUR / .5 hour SN.

  • Oops, They Bit Again!

    In this training, participants will gain an understanding of why some children bite. We will explore different techniques that can be used to help the child and the family of the biter as well as how to help the children who are being bit. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 1 hour CD / 1 hour HSN

  • Proper Supervision

    Preschool – This training will discuss the proper supervision of children in the classroom and on the playground. We will explore the ethics of supervising children. Child abuse and neglect reporting procedures will be discussed. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 3 Hours HSN. {*} Required for Columbia Academy Employees

    Elementary and Middle School – The training will discuss the proper supervision of school age children in the classroom as well as throughout the school building. Participants will learn how to systematically supervise and develop a responsive classroom approach to supervision.   • Peanuts, Milk, & Eggs, OH MY!

    Have you ever felt overwhelmed by a child who was allergic to almost everything? This training will explore the challenges of food allergies in your classroom and tips on making your classroom safe. You will learn how to read ingredient labels for cooking projects and snacks as well as other items that may cause an allergic reaction. Finally, you will learn the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and the steps you need to properly help the child. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 2 hours HSN

  • Putting it All Together

    I collected my work samples, observed, and completed the checklists. What do I do next? Learn how to take the information you have gathered and complete progress reports, and summary reports. Infants and Toddlers will focus on observation using the Ounce Scale. 2 ‘s and 3’s will focus on observation using Creative Curriculum. 4’s – Elementary and Middle School will focus on observation using The Work Sampling System. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 2 hours CUR.

  • Ready, Set, Cook!

    Learn about the importance of choosing healthy foods for snacks and cooking projects by using My Plate. You will learn how to incorporate other learning activities into cooking projects and snack times. There will be hands on cooking projects to create and eat. There will be a discussion and active participation on the importance of limiting screen time so that children and teachers can increase their physical activity. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 3 hours HSN

  • Ready, Set, Potty Train!

    Stressed out by Potty Training? This training will explore positive ways to prepare the children, their parents and you the teacher for a successful potty training experience. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 1 hour CD / 1 hour SN

  • Ready, Set, Touch!

    Infants, toddlers, and twos learn about their world by engaging all of their senses. This workshop explores hands-on ways to bring sensory-based experiences to your classroom. This workshop will discuss activities that are developmentally appropriate for your program. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 2 hours CD

  • Summer Safety and Supervision

    Preschool: This training will explore the challenges of safety and supervision during the summer months. We will also discuss pool, playground, and sun safety. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 2 hours HSN. {*} Required for Columbia Academy Employees

  • The Child Care Provider as a Professional

    The child care provider will be introduced to the components of professionalism that promote a successful work environment and relationships. ** Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 3 hours PRO / This class also meets new Credentialing Modifications for Level 3 and 4.

  • Transitions: Let’s Do Something Different

    Transitions can be difficult for children, but making your expectations clear can eliminate the stress and ensure that children remain engaged. Learn how to make transitioning easier for you and the children. What is Next?   • The Great Outdoors

    Respect for the needs of children and natural materials are the emphasis in exploring creative ways to enhance outdoor learning opportunities. Understand how to use learning objectives, observations and interactions to plan and create lessons that enhance a child’s problem solving skills.     Explore the wonders of a parachute! Learn how to incorporate learning lessons into activities that provides laughter for all ages. **Approved for Core of Knowledge Credit! 2 hours CUR

    Lots of emotions fill our classrooms every day. Learn how to help children deal with their emotions and work out issues within the classroom using their words.
