Easing Back-to-School Stress

August 27, 2021

Teachers and students alike are returning to classrooms this fall after a whirlwind year and a half. Back-to-school preparations are in full swing, and now more than ever, our Columbia Academy teachers are preparing to nurture their community of students, build and cultivate those relationships, and support the social and emotional needs of children.

Our whole-child approach to education is designed to build a solid foundation of trust and confidence between families and teachers, meeting each child where they are at academically, socially, and emotionally, and helping them reach that next level.

Creating a peaceful learning environment is essential. When children return to the classroom, they will be filled with many emotions. For some children, this may be the first time they have ever been in a physical school building, and for others, it may have been a long time since they last attended school in person. We strive to ensure that children feel calm and secure, and know that school is a welcoming, peaceful place.

We focus strongly on that social and emotional connection. Building connections with children helps them to ease into their new routines and feel safe. Outdoor play is critically important, giving children the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air, open space, and participate in outdoor activities or playtime.

Parents, as you prepare to send your children back to school, remember that there will be moments of anxiety and reflection. Be kind to yourselves. Be present, consistent, patient, and gentle as your children adjust to their new back-to-school routines. Make sure there is a continuing and honest dialogue between you and your child. Draw on your strengths to help them feel calm and ease their anxiety. Be sure your child knows you support them and that their feelings are normal.

Our teachers and administrators are here to support you and your child during this transition. We look forward to building and continuing our relationships with families, and to a wonderful 2021-22 school year!
