About Our Middle School Program

At Columbia Academy, middle school represents our students' capstone experience on campus. This stage brings everything together as young people solidify their interests, talents, and character before high school. Our fully accredited program creates an environment where middle school students develop confidence and academic skills while building relationships with peers and teachers.

We guide middle school students through this important phase with our Character Education Program, which teaches them to live virtuously, take educational risks, practice self-discipline, and give back to their community. Each school day provides opportunities for growth through both academic coursework and character development.

From Grade 6 to Grade 8: Development Support for Every Stage

Our middle school program serves young people as they navigate the transition from elementary to high school. Students develop critical thinking skills, independence, and confidence while building a strong academic foundation for their future.

Character Education Before High School Middle school can present challenges as young people learn to navigate conflict and build healthy relationships. We guide students through this process with our Character Education Program, teaching them to live virtuously by studying different virtues each month including citizenship, diligence, empathy, gratitude, honesty, mindfulness, patience, and respect.

Academic Excellence and High School Preparation Our middle school students receive college preparatory education taught by experienced teachers who understand how to prepare young people for high school success. Core subjects include language arts, math, science/STEM, and social studies, all designed to build the skills students need for their future education.

Leadership Training and Community Service Every middle school student performs 10 or more hours of community service each school year, and eighth grade students serve as the "seniors" on campus, responsible for morning announcements for the entire school. Our Young Leaders Club teaches leadership skills and gives students opportunities to interview local business owners.

Academic Offerings for Middle School Students

Project-Based Learning Middle school students learn best when they can connect material covered in the classroom to real experiences. Through engaging project-based learning, our educators help bridge students' conceptual understanding with their understanding of procedural practices. Core subjects studied include language arts, math, science/STEM, and social studies.

Differentiated Instruction from Experienced Teachers Our middle school students thrive in a safe, nurturing environment. Teachers meet students where they stand and differentiate instruction based on individual needs. Every morning starts with advisory time for any students who have questions or need extra help from one teacher who knows them well.

Enriching Electives & Student Organizations Middle school provides a great time for young people to pursue passions and discover new interests. With the help of their homeroom teacher, middle school students have the autonomy to choose their own electives and can join student organizations. Popular options include band, cheer, chorus, cooking, creative writing, drama and acting, games, knitting, photography, printmaking, yearbook, and the Young Leaders Club.

Off-Campus Learning Experiences Our location near Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland, gives middle school students access to exciting educational experiences beyond the classroom, including Fort McHenry, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, the Cryptology Museum, the National Aquarium, and more.

Setting Middle School Students Up for Success

The Columbia Academy experience culminates in middle school graduates who feel confidently prepared for high school. Understanding the unique struggles of middle schoolers helps us create programs that support young people during this important phase.

Safe Learning Spaces for Young People At Columbia Academy, we take an individualized approach to educating and supporting middle school students. We celebrate each student's individual uniqueness by ensuring they feel safe, supported, and seen in their classrooms and around campus. When students feel safe in their learning environment, they develop more self-confidence, perform better academically, and feel comfortable speaking up.
