5 Ways to Help Children Cope with Stress

August 25, 2020

In today’s rapidly-evolving world, constant changes and new information can feel overwhelming at times. Most people, particularly children, appreciate a degree of predictability and routine in their lives. Children need time to process changes and new information, and can become stressed if not given the appropriate time to do so. Below are some ways to help your child de-stress:

  1. Teach them some quick calming strategies, such as taking a deep breath or imagining their favorite place
  2. Talk openly with your children about their stress and ask them open-ended questions about the good and the bad things that happened in their day.
  3. Allow for some down time. If their schedule is too busy, consider cutting out some activities to help reduce stress.
  4. Redirect their attention. Find something that makes them laugh, perform a random act of kindness for someone, read a book, or play a game.
  5. Model healthy coping strategies. Let your child see you doing something healthy to help you cope with stress.
