Welcome to Columbia Academy Preschool at Kings Contrivance
Getting yourself — and a child — out the door on time can be one of the biggest challenges of the day. And that’s before you add in any traffic delays. Thankfully, enrolling your child in Columbia Academy’s Preschool at Kings Contrivance can ease some of that travel pressure and provide the peace of mind that comes from knowing your child is well cared for.
With us, you’ll find:
- A preschool with a play-based curriculum
- Caring, highly qualified teachers who meet students where they are
- Outdoor spaces designed to keep kids active and engaged in learning
- An environment that is emotionally and physically safe
Families who attend our private preschool also appreciate that the school is close to 32 and 29, making it a convenient stop when a child has an appointment or a parent wants to pop in for a school play. Plus, Kings Contrivance Village Center offers shops, including a Harris Teeter for last-minute dinner items. For all of those reasons, and more, families choose us to provide preschool for their toddlers and infants.
Dive Into Columbia Academy’s Preschool at Kings Contrivance
The Preschool at Kings Contrivance is part of Columbia Academy, a private school in Columbia, MD, that offers a strong academic foundation for students from Preschool through Grade 8. Students from four preschool locations — Kings Contrivance, Thunder Hill, Kendall Ridge, and Maple Lawn — come together at one location starting with Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten. That main location, referred to as the Elementary Middle School, is on Old Columbia Road near the Preschool at Kings Contrivance.
All four of the preschools use the same play-based curriculum. In addition, Kings Contrivance also offers:
- A shore theme, with a lighthouse and boat for children to play on
- Playgrounds for each age group
- A multipurpose room so children have space to play even when they can’t go outside
- Extracurricular activities
- Busing to Clemens Crossing Elementary School
- A key code entry system that only allows those with authorized access to come into the school

Ever since Ashley took over as Director, teacher turnover slowed down and our kids have had more consistent teachers. We have appreciated how Columbia academy has helped so much with our kids’ development. Potty training has been going so much easier than we anticipated thanks to their help.

In the Neighborhood
“We live on Ft. Meade Army base. Columbia Academy is about a 15-minute drive for our family. We chose this school not only for its proximity, but because of the Transitional Kindergarten program, small class sizes, and the academics for our children. It is in a convenient location to run errands before or after pick-up.”
